Rock Hill, S.C. – Brevard College men’s tennis freshman Heikki Riikonen has been named South Atlantic Conference men’s tennis Player of the Week, it was announced Tuesday by the league office.

Riikonen (Kuopio, Finland) had a fine week for the Tornados, going 3-1 in the No. 2 doubles spot and 4-0 playing at the Nos. 1 and 2 singles spots to lead the Tornados to a perfect 4-0 record as a team.

Monday against St. John Fisher, the Tornados won, 8-1, and Riikonen won twice. In No. 2 doubles, he teamed with Jarred Fisher for an 8-1 win over Karl Schiefer and Mike O'Connor. In singles, Riikonen played the top flight and beat Matt Aquino, 6-0, 6-0.

Tuesday in an 8-1 win over Stonehill, Riikonen again teamed with Fisher to win in the 2nd doubles spot, 8-3 over William Herchel and Jason Allegretti. In No. 2 singles, the Finland native won over Michael Mashkevich, 6-0, 6-0.

Wednesday against West Liberty State, the Tornados won 9-0 and Riikonen was again the key cog. Along with Fisher in the 2nd pairs flight, he beat Tim Sylvester and Tyler McCullough, 8-0. At the 2nd singles spot, he finally lost a game but still dominated the match, 6-4, 6-2 over Alex Fager.

The Tornados completed their fine week with a 4-3 win over Division I member North Carolina Central, and Riikonen was again a big reason why. He and Fisher were beaten in doubles, 8-4 by Andres Perez and Trey Chatman, 8-4. But in singles, the freshman won a vital point over Jose Fabara, 6-1, 6-1.

Riikonen is the fifth Tornado athlete to win SAC weekly honors this season.
