Greeneville, Tenn. - The Tornados dropped a pair of games on Tuesday afternoon to conference opponent Tusculum College, falling 8-0 in game one and 2-0 in game two. For the season, Brevard (14-12) falls to 1-5 in the SAC while the Lady Pioneers (12-20) improve to 3-5 in conference play.

Game 1: Tusculum 8, Brevard 0 (6)

Tusculum came out on top in a game where the two pitchers combined for one strikeout between them. Jennifer Gift (7-7) recorded the lone strikeout in the bottom of the fifth, retiring Alex Kimbrell on strikes to end the inning. Holli Cadenhead (7-12) picked up the win for the Lady Pioneers, giving up four hits, all singles, in six innings.

Brevard recorded all four of their hits in the top of the first as Beth Brooker led off the game with a base hit to right center. A single by Kristina Clayton through the left side of the infield moved Brooker over to second. Chelsi Mallory followed with a single of her own, but Brooker was tagged out on the play, leaving runners at first and second. A fielder’s choice off the bat of Jennifer Brown left the Tornados with two outs before a single by Katie Brown loaded the bases. However, Cadenhead retired Becca Curlee on a fly ball to straightaway center to end the inning.

Tusculum got on the board in the bottom of the third, plating five runs on seven hits. Kimbrell and Taylor MacDonald led off the scoring for the Lady Pioneers as Savannah Ewing doubled the duo home with one out. Ewing scored on Makenzie Loy’s single up the middle. Back-to-back singles by Jessica McKee and Phlyscia Powell scored Loy and Ashley Basilicato to complete the two-out run. Gift issued a walk to Rachael Wilburn to load the bases, but got out of the jam by retiring Kimbrell on a line drive snagged by Tornados third baseman Maddie Fletcher.

Tusculum added another run in the fifth as McKee singled up the middle, scoring Tasha Morrell.

The Lady Pioneers ended the game in the sixth as a double by Rachel Hopper scored MacDonald and Basilicato’s base hit drove home Jennifer Turley to give Tusculum the 8-0 win.

Game 2: Tusculum 2, Brevard 0

A pair of unearned runs denied an excellent game pitched by Tornados starter Liz Houser (7-5) as she fell in game two, despite striking out four without giving up a walk. Tusculum starter Lindsay Bridges (3-4) threw a three-hitter in recording the win.

Brevard put runners on base in each of the first three innings but were unable to capitalize on their opportunities. Mallory drove a single to left in the first inning, and Curlee reached on an infield single in the second but both times the Tornados were unable to move the runner from first base.

In the third, Katie Thornburg led off the inning by reaching second on a throwing error by the Tusculum third baseman. A bunt single by Sarah Carlos moved Thornburg over to third. However, Thornburg was picked off as Carlos attempted to steal second, ending the Tornados scoring chance.

Tusculum got on the board in the bottom of the third, taking advantage of back-to-back errors by the Brevard defense as Kimbrell and Ewing came around to score to put the Lady Pioneers up 2-0.

Brevard had a final chance to put a run across in the top of the sixth as Brooker reached third with two outs, but Mallory grounded out to the pitcher to end the inning.

Brevard continues conference play on Saturday, April 4, as they host Mars Hill in a doubleheader. Game time between the Tornados and the Lions is set for 1 p.m.
