Hickory, N.C. - The Tornados put across two runs in the top of the first inning, but were unable to score the rest of the way in falling to top-seeded Wingate University, 6-2, in the opening round of the 2009 Food Lion SAC Softball Tournament.
Jennifer Gift (7-14) suffered the loss for the Tornados, who fell to 17-26 on the season. Gift allowed six runs on nine hits while striking out two. Brittany Blankenship (16-7) took the win for the Bulldogs (30-12-1), going the distance, scattering five hits while retiring three batters on strikes.
Brevard scored first as leadoff batter Beth Brooker came around to score on Kasey Fagan’s base hit up the middle and Kristina Clayton touched home on Katie Brown’s sacrifice fly to left field.
Wingate came back in the third with three runs as Broyer came home on Debra Grijalva’s sacrifice fly in foul territory down the right field line and Emily Chavis drove in Leyila Myers and Pettigrew with a triple to right center to put the Bulldogs up 3-2.
The Bulldogs doubled the lead with another run in the fifth as Pettigrew scored on Myers grounder to second.
Brevard threatened in the top of the sixth, loading the bases on a pair of singles and a hits-batsman, but Blankenship froze Becca Curlee with a full-count change-up to escape the jam with the lead intact.
Wingate plated two more runs in the bottom half of the inning as Heather Winchester and Broyer came around to score to give the Bulldogs their remaining runs of the contest.
Brevard falls to the elimination bracket to take on Newberry at Hickory High School, also at 1:30 p.m.
Wingate advances to face Catawba on Friday at Bears Field with game time set for 1:30 p.m.
