Carson-Newman defeats Brevard 2-1

Brevard, N.C. - The Tornados held the nationally ranked Carson-Newman Eagles off the scoreboard in the first half before allowing an early goal in the second. A Bailey Varley goal tied the game before Carson-Newman scored the game decider handing Brevard a 2-1 loss on Senior Day.

Carson-Newman improves to 13-2-1 and 5-1-1 in the conference while the Tornados drop to 6-10-1 and 0-6-1 in the conference.

The Eagles opened the scoring in the 48th minute after the Tornados held them scoreless on eleven shots in the first. Sandra Kaelin caught the Tornados’ defense off guard and found Katie Hunter open for a chip shot putting Carson-Newman up 1-0.

Brevard found an opportunity to respond in the 61st minute when Varley charged towards the Eagles keeper, Lauren MacKenzie, who was attempting to gather the ball when Varley knocked the ball out of her hands and sent the ball bouncing into the net.

The Eagles, finally capitalized on one of their eleven corner kick opportunities in the 70th minute when Melissa Morris found a loose ball in the middle of the box to give Carson-Newman a 2-1 edge.

Senior goalkeeper Sydney Douglas saved ten of the Eagles twelve shots on goal, keeping the game within reach for the Tornados who were outshot 27-4.

The Tornados will play their last game of the season next Friday when they travel to Catawba for 4 p.m. game.
