Catawba tops Brevard 6-0

Salisbury, N.C. - The Tornados traveled to Catawba Friday afternoon for their season finale only to be turned away by the Indians who topped Brevard 6-0. The loss leaves the Tornados tied with Mars Hill in conference standings requiring a coin toss to see which team will compete in the tournament.

Catawba’s victory Friday afternoon boosted them to 12-4-2 and 5-2-1 in the SAC while the Tornados fell to 6-10-1 and 0-7-1 in the SAC.

The Indians scored two goals in the first half. Their first goal came in the 13th minute when Laela Ghorbani connected a long pass to Alyssa Retundie who headed a goal in. Then in the 21st minute Katie Gair scored an unassisted goal when her shot deflected into the left corner of the net.

The Tornados were unable to take a shot until the 51st minute when Allie Hovis and Nikki Peacock took back to back shots on goal forcing Catawba keeper, Lindsay Webster to make the saves. Peacock threatened to score again ten minutes later, but was once again turned away by Webster.

The Indians scored two goals within minutes of each other in the second half. Erinn Wescoat scored in the 67th minute followed by a penalty kick goal from Tasha Wilhelm in the 69th minute. Maria Borland and Amanda Beck each added a goal late in the second half making the final score 6-0.

Senior goalkeeper Sydney Douglas, in her final regular season game as a Tornado, saved 9 of 15 for Brevard.

In addition to Douglas, Kayla Yingst, Jessica Guadagno, Chelsea Shew, and Kelly Harris also played the final regular season game of their careers and will wait to find out if the team will receive a bid to the conference tournament.

The Tornados tied Mars Hill 1-1 on October 16 at home giving the teams identical 0-7-1 records. A coin toss tomorrow will decide which team will receive one of the eight bids to the conference tournament which begins next Wednesday November 4.
