Brevard, N.C. - Josh Roper sent the game into overtime with a layup with three seconds remaining on the clock and Jacques Dovonou scored the last six points for the Tornados as Brevard capped off their home opener with a thrilling 75-73 win over the visiting Saints on Saturday afternoon.
Jonathan Whitson led all scorers with 21 points on seven of 13 shooting from the floor as Brevard (2-1) outshot the visiting Saints, connecting on 43.5 percent (30-69) of their attempts from the floor. Dovonou completed his first double-double as a Tornado pulling down a game-high 11 rebounds, while Roper added 15 points and six rebounds, as well as led the team with four assists as the Tornados out-rebounded the Saints 49-43 on the afternoon.
Jarrell Douglass led Limestone (3-1) with 19 points and 10 rebounds while going eight of 10 from the free throw line as the Saints converted 73.3 percent (22-30) of their attempts from the stripe on the afternoon. Stewart Clark added 15 points and eight rebounds, while Danny Friend and Tyron Evans each had 11 as the Saints connected on 34.8 percent (23-66) of their field goal attempts in the game.
The pace of the game was slow in the early going as the teams combined for 12 points in the first seven minutes of play, with Limestone holding the early 10-2 lead behind a pair of three-pointers and four points by Charles Blue. Brevard tied the game back up with an 8-0 run at the 12:03 mark as Sam Carlisle put in a layup and Roper had six straight points due to a combination of a layup, free throw and three-pointer. The teams would swap baskets for the remained of the first half as a Roper layup put the score at 27-25 in favor of Limestone as the teams headed into the locker room.
Carlisle would tie the game up coming out of the break with a layup as the Tornados built a five-point lead with 14:15 left in the game as Whitson put in a layup off the assist from Roper to give the home team a 36-31 lead. Limestone would respond to also go up by five as Michael Barrett drilled a shot from behind the arc to put the score at 54-49 with 6:09 to play.
As the game moved into the final minutes of regulation, Douglass converted a pair of free throw attempts to give the Saints a three-point lead at 63-60 with 1:27 on the clock. Darin Dellinger sliced through the lane for the Tornados to cut the lead to one, then after a free throw by Douglass put the score back to a two-point game, Roper, out of a timeout by Coach Michael Jones, spun off his defender and put the ball off the glass and in sending the game into overtime tied at 64.
The score was tied through the first 3:58 of the extra period before a pair of free throws by Dovonou gave the Tornados the 73-72 lead. Douglass converted the second out of a pair of free throws for the Saints to tie the game back up at 73 with 34 seconds to play.
Coming out of a pair of timeouts, the Tornados again went back to the drawing board and this time it was Dovonou who scooped up the loose ball under the basket off Roper’s drive and put it in for the layup to put the home team up 75-73 with eight seconds to play. Limestone had one final chance to tie the game up with three seconds left on the clock as Clark went to the free throw line, but the sophomore missed both and Whitson corralled the final rebound for the Tornados as they held on to win, 75-73.
