Whitson leads three Tornados in double figures with 17 points

Charlotte, N.C. - Brevard started the second half with a 16-6 run and Josh Roper, Jonathan Whitson and Jacques Dovonou each scored double figures as the Tornados defeated Erskine College on Tuesday afternoon at Time Warner Cable Arena, 64-46.

The Tornados (3-1) were led by Whitson’s 17 points and eight rebounds as the senior forward went six of seven from the field and five of six from the free throw line to go with four assists. Roper added 15 points, connecting from behind the arc three times to go with four assists and Dovonou added 11 points and four rebounds in 19 minutes playing time as Brevard connected on 51.0 percent (26-51) of their attempts from the floor, while out-rebounding the Flying Fleet 40-27.

Dejan Nedelkovski and Jay Boulware each led the Flying Fleet (0-2) with 11 points with Nedelkovski dishing out three assists and Boulware pulling down a team-high four rebounds.

Brevard opened the game with an 11-2 run spanning the first 6:22 of the game as Dovonou connected on a three-pointer on the Tornados opening possession and Whitson added four points in the span. Erskine would come back to cut the game back to within two at 13-11 with 7:40 remaining in the first half as Nedelkovski drove into the lane for a layup and make the subsequent free throw after being fouled by Tornados Cody Siniard.

Brevard’s lead would increase to eight at 21-13 after Roper’s second three-pointer of the opening half, but a comeback by Erskine capped by Boulware’s layup with 56 seconds left on the clock sent the teams into the locker room with the Tornados holding the slight 23-20 edge.

Brevard opened up the second half with an 10-0 run as Whitson put in four more points and Dovonou drove the length of the court before finishing off with an acrobatic lay-in as the Tornados went up 33-20 with 16:29 to play before a three-pointer by Boulware put Erskine on the board in the second half.

The Tornados were able to retain a double-digit lead in the second half the rest of the way, going up by 24 with 1:39 remaining in the game as redshirt sophomore Whitney Galloway pulled down an offensive rebound and went back up for two for his first collegiate points to put the score at 64-40 before the Flying Fleet went on a 6-0 run to end the game as Matt Herring, Donovan Smalls and Brandon Quarls all drove in for layups.

Brevard returns home as the Tornados open the 2009-2010 South Atlantic Conference season in Boshamer Gymnasium on Saturday, December 5th, against Tusculum College. Tipoff for the game is set for 4 p.m. and fans are encouraged to join in the Brevard College Athletic Training Staff’s Toys-For-Tots drive, as each fan who brings a new, unwrapped toy to the gate will receive free admission to the game between the Tornados and Pioneers.
