ROCK HILL, S.C. - Brevard College's Jonathan Whitson has been named the South Atlantic Conference men's basketball Player of the Week for the week ending January 17, 2010.
Whitson, a senior forward from Clyde, N.C. (Pisgah HS), led the Tornados to a 2-1 week, averaging 26 points, 10 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game while connecting on 62.2 percent (28-45) of his field goal attempts and 83.3 percent (21-24) of his free throw attempts, including setting a Brevard College record for most consecutive free throws made in a game.
Whitson opened the week with a 27 points, nine rebound performance against Truett-McConnell College on the road, playing only 23 minutes in the contest. On Wednesday at Catawba, Whitson recorded his fourth double-double of the season with 21 points and 11 rebounds, connecting on 60 percent (9-15) of his attempts from the floor and was 3-4 from the free throw line. The Preseason All-SAC selection also dished out two assists in the loss.
On Saturday, Whitson scored 30 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season, going 8-14 from the floor and setting a Brevard College record for consecutive free throws made in one game, hitting his first 14 as the Tornados held on for the 88-87 win in Cuddy Arena.
On the season, Whitson is ranked in the top 10 in the South Atlantic Conference scoring, rebounding, free throw percentage and blocked shots and is the Brevard College all-time leader in points scored over his career with 1,764.
