Due West, S.C. - The No. 21 Erskine College Flying Fleet scored multiple runs in four consecutive innings Tuesday afternoon to win 16-5 at Grier Field. A six-run fifth inning was Erskine’s best frame of the day.
Freshman Pitcher Heath Gray started and gave the Flying Fleet (5-3) four innings of work, allowing four hits, five runs, and three earned runs. He struck out one and walked three. Jacob White made his second consecutive start for the Tornados (0-2, 0-0 SAC), pitching two innings and allowing three runs, all earned, on three hits. He struck out two and walked two. White also picked off John Bolding with one out in the second.
Third Baseman Drew Willingham and Shortstop Chase Anthony each homered for Erskine. Willingham hit a three-run blast with two out in the bottom of the second. He finished with two hits, three RBI, and scored three runs. Anthony hit a two-run homer in the Erskine half of the third and went 4-5 with four RBI and three runs scored.
The Tornados scored two runs in the top of the third. M.A. Dozier led off the frame with a walk. Matt Ennis singled and Eric Renegar reached on an error by Willingham, allowing Dozier to score. Matthew Pruitt grounded out to second, driving in Ennis.
The Flying Fleet scored four runs in their half of the fourth inning. The Tornados added three of their own in the top of the fifth. A Dozier leadoff double followed by an Ennis walk and a Renegar single loaded the bases for Second Baseman Kramer Clark with no one out. Clark delivered a two-RBI single to right field. Stephen Mullis followed with a base hit to drive in Renegar.
Erskine broke the game open with a six-run fifth inning. Center fielder Greg Huff laced a two-run double down the left field line. Anthony followed with an RBI single, and first baseman John Bolding tacked on another two-run double off of Tornado hurler Tommy Yearty.
Neither team scored the rest of the way.
Erskine returns to action February 19 for a two-day, three game series against Limestone at Grier Field.
The Tornados welcome South Atlantic Conference Rival Mars Hill to Gil Coan Field for a 2 p.m. first pitch Friday February 19. The teams will play a double header the following day starting at noon.
