Brevard, N.C. - Brevard pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts on the day, but were unable to hold off the King College Tornado who downed the Brevard Tornados, 4-3 and 3-1 Saturday afternoon.

King College begins  their season 2-0, while Brevard falls to 1-3.

Jennifer Gift hit the first home run of the season, while Chelsi Mallory went three of six with an RBI, and Kristina Clayton went three of seven with three runs on the day.

Both Martika Elmore and Liz Houser suffered their second loss of the season to fall to 0-2.

King scored in the top of the first to begin the game, when Shauna Haga crossed the plate with two outs on an Elmore wild pitch.

Brevard quickly responded in their half of the inning, knotting the score 1-1, when Maddie Fletcher drove in Kristina Clayton, on a single. Fletcher was then called out trying to go to second on the same play to end the inning, leaving Chelsi Mallory, on base.

King added three runs in the top of the third, two of which came on back to back doubles from Christy Kooch and Emilee Edelman. Edelman crossed the plate for the final run of the inning when Emily Bennett reached on an error by Clayton.

Brevard worked the bases and added one run in the bottom of the third. Clayton began the inning with a single to left field, followed by a Mallory double, driving her in. Gift sacrificed the runner to third before the Tornados ended the inning on a Carlos fly out to left.

Gift singled for her first RBI of the day, driving in Clayton for the third and final time. King halted Brevard’s hope for a comeback, ending the game on a double play.

Brevard out-hit King 11-6, and had one error to King’s two. Elmore received the loss for Brevard, giving up three earned runs, while striking out six and walking four in seven innings.

Winning pitcher, Samantha Watts pitched seven innings, gave up 11 hits, and struck out three while walking one.

King College added runs in the 3rd, 4th, 5th innings against Houser.

The Tornado scored the first run of the game in the third inning when Natasha Dean singled driving in Haga who had doubled to left to reach base. Houser ended the third striking out Edelman swinging, and began the top of the fourth also striking out Aubree Hutt. Bennett followed, reaching on an error and later scored when Haga also reached on error. Kind then added their final run when Bennett doubled in the fifth.

Gift relieved Houser with two outs in the fourth. Houser was handed her second loss of the season, giving up eight hits, three runs, two of which were earned, and struck out five batters in 4.2 innings.

Gift gave up just one hit in 2.1 innings while striking out one batter. Gift also drove in Brevard’s only run of the game when she went yard for the first time this year with the bases empty in the 7th.

Brevard returns to action on Sunday when Milligan travels to Brevard for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
