Brevard, N.C. - The Tornados topped Virginia Intermont 2-1 in extra innings, and 5-4 scoring the tiebreaking run in the bottom of the seventh, for the Saturday afternoon sweep over the Cobras. Pitcher Martika Elmore continued to mow down batters, recording 15 strikeouts, while allow just one hit. Nicole Heusel hit three for seven, driving and three runs, while Chelsi Mallory hit four for eight with one RBI.
The Tornados improve to 4-6, while Virginia Intermont falls to 2-4.
Elmore improved her record to 2-3, while Jennifer Gift notched her first win, and decision of the season.
Game 1: Brevard 2, Virginia Intermont 1
The Tornados scored the first run of the game in the fourth inning. Mallory led off the inning with double up the left side. Pinch runner, Leslie Hylton advanced to third in Mallory’s place when the Cobras catcher, Kayla Mitchell allowed the ball to bounce into the backstop.
With Hylton in scoring position, Heusel singled up the middle, driving in her first RBI of the day.
The Cobras responded and knotted the game in the fifth when Rachel Cook received a base on balls, and then advanced on the only Cobras hit of the game, a Melissa Hudgins double to left field. Kelli Porter earned the only Cobra RBI of the game when she sacrificed Cook home with a fly ball to right field.
Elmore struck out two batters in the eighth inning, holding the extra inning runner from scoring.
The Tornados placed Kristina Clayton on second to start their half of the eighth. Pinch hitter Michelle Turner advanced Clayton to third on a sacrifice bunt setting up Maddie Fletcher who drove the game winning hit to center field allowing Clayton to score standing up.
Game 2: Brevard 5, Virginia Intermont 4
The Tornados struggled early on, allowing two runs in both the third and fourth innings.
Liz Houser started for the Tornados, going 4.1 innings, and allowing seven hits and four earned runs, while striking out four. Jennifer Gift replaced Houser in the fifth and pitched 2.2 perfect innings.
Down 4-0, the Tornados scored one run in the fifth when Heusel drove in Becca Curlee on a double.
Bailee Packett walked three batters and hit Kayla Dorsey with a pitch in the Tornados’ three run sixth inning with the bases loaded. Curlee earned the next RBI, reaching base on an error by the second baseman, allowing Brittany Jones to score from third. Heusel, the next batter reached on a fielder’s choice, allowing Jennifer Gift to cross the plate for Brevard’s final run of the sixth.
Gift retired all three Cobra batters in the top of the seventh inning. Mallory led off the bottom of the seventh with a double to right center. A batter later, Mallory stole third, and with Sarah Carlos up at bat, Mallory scored on a passed ball for the winning run.
The Tornados return to action on Wednesday when they travel to USC-Aiken for a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m.
