Brevard, N.C. - Nathan Whitmire scored a career high 22 points and Jonathan Whitson added 22 points and five rebounds, but Rob Fields scored 32 points, connecting on four three-pointers in the first half as the Tornados fell to Catawba, 103-92.
With the loss, the Tornados fall to 18-9, 10-6 in the SAC for the season, clinching the #3 seed in the 2010 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference tournament, while Catawba improves to 18-9, 11-5 in the SAC to win the regular season conference title and the top seed.
Whitmire went seven of nine from the floor to lead four Tornados in double figures on the afternoon, connecting on a pair of three-pointers while going a perfect six of six from the free throw line. Sam Carlisle added 18 points and five assists for the Tornados in 29 minutes of play, while Josh Roper had 18 points and a team high six rebounds in the contest as the Tornados shot 53.1 percent from the floor and 80.8 percent from the free throw line in the contest.
Catawba was led by Fields’ effort as the senior went 10 of 12 from the floor and five of seven from behind the arc, leading the Indians as they connected on 57.6 percent of their shots from the floor and 68.2 percent of their shots from behind the arc in the contest. Antonio Houston added 21 points and five assists in the game, while Dominick Reid had 18 points and a team high six rebounds as the Indians connected on 12 three-pointers in the first half on their way to the victory.
The score was knotted up through the first six minutes of the contest as Brevard held the 12-10 lead following Roper’s fast break layup, but Fields scored nine of Catawba’s next 11 points as the Indians went up 21-12 with 12:35 remaining as the Indians outscored the Tornados 48-34 the rest of the way in the first half on their way to a 58-44 halftime lead.
Early in the second half, the Indians built a 20-point lead, but the Tornados came back three times in the game, bringing the score back to within 11 at 70-59, 72-61 and 85-74, but Catawba held a 96-76 lead with 5:11 remaining in the contest.
The Tornados fought back as Whitmire had two of his six steals in the contest to give Brevard a late 14-7 run, but the comeback was cut short as time expired with Catawba winning the SAC regular season championship, 103-92.
Brevard will host a quarterfinal round in Boshamer Gymnasium on Wednesday, March 3rd, as the Tornados will host sixth-seeded Wingate University with tipoff coming at 7 p.m.
