A native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Johnson spent the fall of 2012 as a student assistant with the men’s basketball program at his alma mater, Samford University. Johnson's duties as a student assistant included breaking down opponent’s film, assisting with film exchange, and also serving as a student manager during practice.
Johnson was a four-year member of the men’s basketball program at Samford, playing under Brevard head coach Lee Burgess. During his career he appeared in over 80 games for the Bulldogs. He received the Most Improved Player Award following the 2009-2010 season. Johnson also served as a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee from 2010-2011.
Johnson graduated from Samford in 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in Sport Administration and a minor in General Business.
