Joe Battaglia came to Brevard in March of 2014 after a one-year stint as a graduate assistant at Midwestern State University, a Division II school in the Lone Star Conference located in Wichita Falls, Texas.
While at Midwestern State, Battaglia was responsible for coaching the safeties and special teams units. He also served as an assistant recruiting coordinator and was responsible for recruiting the southeast, eastern seaboard, and much of Texas and Oklahoma. The defense led the Lone Star Conference in total defense, pass defense, points allowed, and interceptions during his time on staff.
Before moving to Midwestern State, Battaglia spent two seasons as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Division III Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania. In 2010, the year before Battaglia joined the Juniata staff, the Eagles had a winless campaign and were ranked in the bottom three teams in the conference in nearly every major defensive category. In two years as the defensive coordinator, Battaglia helped engineer the team's best record since 2003 and a remarkable turnaround on defense. The team saw a 15.5-point swing in points allowed per contest, improved by nearly 50 yards per game in total defense, and gave up 19 fewer touchdowns.
In a previous stint at Juniata, Battaglia coached the defensive backs and served as the recruiting and video coordinator. In between his jobs with the Eagles, he spent a season at Division III Stevenson University coaching defensive backs and special teams.
Battaglia graduated from Guilford College with a bachelor's degree in sport management while spending four years as a linebacker. He was named a team captain during his senior campaign.
