High School: Kaartinen comes to Brevard from Espoo, Finland and Makelanrinne Sports High where she ran under Coach Tommy Ekblom. She received the Track and Field Club Lepparaaran Sisu's award for the best middle distance runner in 2009. In addition to cross country, Kaartinen also participated in swimming and tennis. She is the daughter of Tarja Koski-Kaartinen and Juha Kaartinen.
