BREVARD, N.C. - Sophomore Alyssa Hetherington drove home her first goal of 2019 with service from fellow sophomore Abbie Petrosky and senior Audrey Cardwell, while junior Sallie Riggan drilled a game-winning penalty kick to push the Brevard College Tornados women's soccer team (4-7-3, 3-3 USAS) past the Wesleyan College Wolves (3-10-1, 1-5 USAS) on a rainy Sunday afternoon at Ives-Lemel Family Field.
Hetherington's first goal of 2019 came by way of a corner kick that was cleared by the Wolves to Cardwell, who passed to Petrosky on the near sideline. Petrosky took a touch then sent the ball into the middle of the box, finding Hetherington's left foot as the sophomore placed the ball into the right corner for the score.
After the Wolves managed to find the back of the net just over a minute later, Brevard and Wesleyan headed to the halftime intermission deadlocked at 1-1.
Just 57 seconds into the second half, a handball was called on Wesleyan inside of their own box, setting up BC's Riggan for the penalty kick attempt. The junior rocketed the ball past the keeper in the bottom left corner of the goal, securing her first score of the 2019 season and first career game-winning goal, putting the Tornados up 2-1.
From that point on, Brevard dominated possession, smothering the Wolves on defense and letting shots fly at will en route to their 2-1 victory. Brevard held a 27-9 shot advantage on Wesleyan, including a 15-6 mark on shots-on-goal. The Tornados also won a total of seven corner kicks compared to the Wolves' three.
Junior goalkeeper Rebeccah Rojas let up just one goal in 90 minutes of action, earning the victory while stopping four Wesleyan shots on the afternoon. Rojas concludes her impressive week in-frame for the Tornados, allowing just one goal in 290 minutes of action in Brevard's three-match homestand this week.
BC's victory on Sunday marked the Tornados' first win streak of the 2019 season, as Brevard will look to continue its winning ways next Saturday, October 19 when the Tornados head to Berea, Ky. to face off against conference foe Berea College. First touch is slated for 1 p.m on the road.
